Outcome Based Education

Title of the Practice

Introduction of Outcome Based Educational framework.

Objectives of the Practice
  • To quantify the expected outcomes from students in terms of their ability and level of attainment using Revised Bloom's taxonomy.
  • To measure the attainments of the students against the expected outcomes quantitatively.
  • To evaluate the attainment of the class against the outcomes envisioned during the design of the curriculum.
The Context

Learning Outcome Based Curricular framework (LOCF) was identified as a quality mandate by the UGC. The college decided to adopt the Outcome Based Education for all UG programmes from 2020 and PG programmes from 2021. The curriculum for the said programmes were passed in the respective Board of studies and passed in the acadmic council and has been adopted.

The Practice
  • The Graduate attributes defined by the University Grants Commission was taken as the national standard and adopted.
  • The college framed the programme outcomes based on the graduate attributes and based on the vision and mission of the college.
  • The Programme specific outcomes were defined by the departments, based on the graduate attributes defined by UGC and based on the programme outcomes defined by the institution.
  • The course designer, while designing the curriculum, defined the course outcomes and the level of attainment of the course outcomes in K-levels defined by the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. The course designer, also maps the course outcomes against the programme outcomes and programme specific outcomes, to see if the course outcomes are in line with the desired programme outcomes.
  • The evaluation of the student is done for each course outcome and level of attainment (K-level) in Revised Bloom's Taxonomy.
  • The programme attainment is calculated using the course attainment.
Evidence of Success:

The college has introduced Outcome Based Education for all UG programmes from 2020 and PG programmes from 2021. The teaching learning process, now effectively captures the desired outcomes and the instruction is designed accordingly, as reflected in the course plan and pedagogy. Evidence for success could be gauged atleast 3 years after the student has graduated as envisioned in the Programme Educational Objectives.

Problems Encountered and Resources Required

Outcome Based Education is a paradigm shift in education. Hence, all stakeholders and coming to terms with the change. Lack of quality software in this space for calculation of attainments is a challenge since the data crunch involved is mind boggling.
