ASTRA
Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST), Chennai - 600 025 organises every year the programme entitled "Applications of Science and Technology in Rural Areas" (ASTRA), a series of five programmes in the areas of science and technology, to the common man in various districts of Tamilnadu in collaboration with various educational institutions in our state. The objective of this programme is to apply science and technology to uplift the socio economic status of the people in backward panchayat in districts of Tamilnadu. For this, TNSCST selects a set of colleges, one college per district, and provides full financial support with a grant of Rs.1.00 lakh to each college.
The scheme envisages the transfer of science and technology techniques and findings to rural areas. This year this programme was conducted during 4th Feb – 15th Feb 2019 in 20 districts of Tamilnadu. The following is the indicative list of trainings/workshops to be organised under this programme.
- Training and demonstration of Solar heater, solar drier, solar cooker, etc.,
- Value addition of products
- Organic farming techniques
- Post harvest techniques
- Management of milky animals
- Floriculture
- Identification of food adulteration
- Ornamental fish culture
- Mushroom cultivation
- Sericulture
- Vermi composting
- New techniques for artisans
- Preservation of vegetables/fruits/seeds
- Honeybee rearing and any other suitable activity for your location.
Beneficiaries for this programme are outgoing students from schools and colleges ready to take small start-ups, Self Help Group members and rural people.
ASTRA @ THE MADURA COLLEGE
The Madura College, Madurai was selected by the Tamilnadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) for implementing the ASTRA Programme for the people of Madurai District (Vide Sanction Letter TNSCST/ASTRA/AR/2018 Dated 10.12.2018 to The Madura College, Madurai). The program was aimed to apply Science and Technology to economically uplift the people life through improving livelihoods of rural people. In order to achieve this aim of the programme, we first designed the following broad objectives in implementing ASTRA programme
- To carry Science & Technology to people
- To uplift the peoples' life through new initiatives
- To sow the eco-friendly spirit in the minds of people
- To train the youth, women, self-help groups and senior citizen for improving their livelihoods.
Then the list of training programmes to be organized under ASTRA along with venue were finalized as given below considering the aim of TNSCST and the objectives & nature of the ASTRA Programmes in consult with expertise available in our college especially in the science departments Zoology, Botany, Bio-Technology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Then we associated each programme a professor as the Event in-charge for the smooth conduct of the events. The co-ordinator of ASTRA programme was Dr. I. Sahul Hamid, Dean (P&D) and IQAC co-ordinator, Madura College, Madurai – 625 011.

Besides an awareness about the programme to be organized was created among the respective beneficiaries by means of advertisement in newspapers, in today and also by issuing pring propaganda notices to the public, so that a big crowd a took part in the programmes.
